About InsideProduct

Throughout my career as a business analyst, project manager, and product leader, I’ve witnessed countless individual contributors spinning their wheels — spending too much time, energy and resources on the wrong problems.

I founded InsideProduct because I realized there were lots of resources talking about product management but few with a focus on those working inside an organization. I wanted to create a space and place that provided content, coaching and support specifically for people who want to stay on the hands-on side of product work, while still growing and advancing their career.

Meet Kent

Because I’ve worked in software product management for more years than I care to admit — been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt — I’m fluent in agile, chaotic and overly bureaucratic environments and yet, have somehow remained unflappable. Having developed products in just about every industry, I’ve yet to find one I couldn’t discern.

My career includes time inside organizations like Wells Fargo, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Principal Financial Group, Delphi Packard Electric Systems, and HD Supply — leading teams, building data-driven solutions that improved performance, and delivering internal tools that made a real difference.

Some of my proudest moments as a product person were when I:

  • Grew traffic by 500% in two years for an association website

  • Rebuilt an internal product at an agriscience company to decrease errors in setting production costs and manage pricing risks

  • Improved claims processing performance index scores by 15% at a health insurance company

  • Chaired the Agile2013 conference — a weeklong conference with 1500+ attendees

As the author of several highly rated books about IT leadership and business analysis, freelance writing and product consulting continue to keep me connected to both technical and business communities. My focus with all that I do is always on making complex topics accessible and practical.

When I’m not facedown on a keyboard writing or product managing, I’m #ubersherpa for my family, listening to jazz and podcasts (but not necessarily podcasts about jazz), and collecting National Parks (we’ve been to 52 out of 63).

If you want to talk jazz (my favorite is Michael Brecker) or tell me your favorite National Park, or if you need someone to help you be a better product person, let’s talk.

Also, let me know if you’d be open to a 30 minute conversation to discuss what you’d find helpful to becoming a more effective product person.
